New Zealand, Canada, Australia among the Top 12 safest countries in 2017

The rankings were based by 23 factors, which included homicide rate, political terror, and deaths from internal conflict. 163 countries were ranked based on how peaceful they are; with 98 countries became more peaceful, 68 countries became less peaceful and 2 countries remained stagnant in their rankings.

Iceland is still the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined at the top of the index by New Zealand, Portugal, Austria, and Denmark, all of which were ranked highly in the 2016 GPI.

New Zealand placed (2nd), Canada (8th), Japan (11th), and Australia (12th) while Europe remains the safest continent in the world, with 8 countries placing this year’s list.
